So what is a chiropractic neurologist

February 15th, 2012 No comments
As in other medical professions, we have individual specialists within the chiropractic profession. Through education, training and board certification, we choose to limit practice to a certain specialty to assist other physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of a variety of conditions.Typically, a chiropractic neurologist serves in the same consulting manner as a medical neurologist. The difference is that the therapies or applications of a chiropractic neurologist do not include drugs or surgery. As a result, certain conditions are more customarily amenable to treatment by a chiropractic neurologist as opposed to a medical neurologist, and vice versa.

In my own practice, I see patients with a variety of vertigo, balance, dizziness and movement disorders, dystonia, headaches, and pain. There are naturally conditions for which drugs and surgery are more appropriate, and, many conditions for which drugs and surgery are inappropriate. It is my job to discern the two and treat those conditions that are amenable to the type of treatment, which we provide.

There is a growing demand for the drug free treatments that we provide. Although not against the utilization of surgery or drugs when appropriate, our treatment focuses on not using them. We will refer a patient to another appropriate specialist who uses these modalities if that treatment is the most appropriate for a given condition.

How does one become a chiropractic neurologist?

The training to become a board certified neurologist in the chiropractic profession is an additional three years didactic and clinically based residency program, (after the doctor’s degree), which is conducted through an accredited university or college. Board examination is provided annually for which the candidate must sit to become board certified. Certification is provided through NOCA, (National Organization for Competency Assurance).
When do I make the decision to see a chiropractic neurologist?
Neurologists from a Chiropractic medicine background, trained extensively in neurologic rehabilitation applications, are in great demand. Nonetheless, the unfortunate reality is that most patients will go through the usual channels of failed allopathic treatments, before making the appointment to come see us. Many of these patients suffer needlessly for years prior to making that decision, oftentimes making themselves worse in the process. It is far more appropriate to engage our type of drug free treatment first, escalating to more complicated treatments secondarily, rather than vice versa, which oddly has been the trend, although more recently we see this changing.

Dr. Scopelliti has over 1000 hours in postdoctoral neurology, and is a board certified chiropractic neurologist, practicing at the 279 Professional Arts Bldg at the rear of Monmouth Medical Center, in Long Branch, NJ. He is also currently the president of the NJ Chiropractic Council on Neurology; website: http://www.dcneuro.info. With over twenty years of practice, ten of those years specializing in neurology, his office focuses on the drug free management of patients with vertigo, dizziness, balance loss, presyncope, dystonia, various stages of coma, and many other neurologic as well as behavioral and cognitive disorders. Dr. Scopelliti is an author and lecturer of postdoctoral neurology, and has also written several software applications for vestibular rehabilitation; http://www.dcneuro.biz. Because of the nature of our practice and the high level of difficulty involved with the types of patients seen, our office customarily sees patients from several states for consultation and/or co-management. Dr. Scopelliti offers a free no obligation consultation including a balance test/risk of fall analysis prior to the commencement of any examinations or treatment. Chiropractic Neurologist Gives Patients Another Option

December 28th, 2010 No comments

“How do you thank someone who basically hands you back your life?” This is the question asked by Andres, who at a mere 20 years of age, suffered with ongoing vertigo which no one could diagnose much less effectively treat, and who “saw more specialists than there should exist, and was prescribed more medications than you could shake a stick at”. These are the words of Andres, who’s world finally stood still for the first time in over two years after only a relatively short course of treatment. Andres used the internet to find my website, and shortly thereafter became a patient. “It took me too long to find you, but only a fraction of it to get 100% better”.

One of about 800 board certified chiropractic neurologists worldwide, and one of only six serving NJ, the field is gaining momentum. According to the American Chiropractic Neurology Board the number of chiropractic neurologists has doubled in the last ten years. “We’re like the last resort-type thing for mystery illnesses,”. “We tend to see all the patients who have either already given up hope, or are on the verge of giving up hope. They are frustrated from going from specialist to specialist with only more drug offerings as treatment. Many have been told to simply live with their illness. “Chiropractic neurology is really just functional neurology or neurologic rehabilitation; we find (oftentimes creative) ways to fix what’s not working in your brain, and we do it without the use of drugs or surgery, unless of course the use of those things is warranted”.

A lot of people think this is the wave of the future, “The general public is tired of taking medication, and we want people to know there are other options out there.” With now over two thousand hours in specialized postdoctoral studies in neurology, much of it specific to dizziness and balance disorders, it is immediately apparent that this doctor is passionate about treating patients. Upon entering his office, one finds a wall of similar letters written by prior patients, thanking him for giving them their lives back. It is almost overwhelming. “We actually have many more letters on file than we could ever post. We tend to boast those given to us by the more difficult cases. We have enjoyed many successes, from patients with headaches, dystonia, vertigo and dizziness to others with odd conglomerations of neurologic symptoms of seemingly unknown origin. We are happy to state that our success is quite high. As such, we have enjoyed referral arrangements with many area physicians, however, there still remain those who are either unaware of our existence, or, unaware of the appropriateness of our treatments”.

Vertigo And Chiropractic Care

November 24th, 2010 No comments

Many of us do not know about the connection between vertigo and neck trauma. There is a lot that modern science has achieved but yet we find many unanswered questioned than those that are answered. This holds true in case of research of vertigo. No particular reason has been found as to why certain people suffer from vertigo. Some research shows that it can be due to upper cervical trauma or neck trauma. It can be an underlying reason for various types of vertigo like benign position vertigo, meniere’s disease and disembarkment syndrome.

Since there are many nerves that transmit through the upper cervical spine, if there is any problem with this part, it can cause trouble for other parts of the body. Here the connection between the vertigo and the upper cervical area becomes important. If these vertebrae get out of place, even a little, vertigo takes place. The symptoms persist until the neck injury is taken care of. Chiropractic care can help in case of vertigo. This is done by correcting the position of the injured cervical vertebrae and especially C1 and C2. Once these vertebrae are realigned, certain types of vertigo can be reduced or even eliminated.

People look for upper cervical chiropractic treatment for many kinds of vertigo. Meniere’s disease is connected with an abnormal amount of fluid in the inner ear. When there is an imbalance of fluids, it creates dizziness. The person might feel like his or her head is continuously spinning. It can also result in hear loss and continuous ringing in the ear. Episodes of vertigo can be intermittent but can also be debilitating. It can last from anywhere between half an hour to many hours. A person might feel very sleepy during an attack. It may become hard for them to drive, work, walk or go on with the normal daily activities.

Disembarkment syndrome is a type of vertigo which can happen to a person who is on a boat or on airplane. Usually, you might feel dizzy after a plane trip or a cruise; it goes off after some minutes or hours.

Another type of vertigo is benign positional vertigo or BPV. In a normal ear, there is a semicircular canal that contains fluid which sends signals to the head when it is disturbed about the movement of the head. When someone has BPV, small particles in the inner ear become dislodged. This results in a faulty signal being sent to the head about movement of the head even when it is not moving. This results in episodes of vertigo and dizziness. Chiropractic treatment can help a lot in case of vertigo. You should consult your chiropractor in case you are having such attacks.

Helping Whiplash With Chiropractic

September 29th, 2010 No comments

Whiplash is a neck condition that is caused by a sudden movement of the head, usually brought on by an accident of some sort. The head can be jerked backward, forward, or sideways because of a sudden jolting of the rest of the body. Types of accidents that tend to cause whiplash include car accidents and sports injuries, but there are other ways in which the neck can be moved suddenly and violently. Perhaps the biggest threat with whiplash is that it can take months or even years for symptoms to appear, sometimes causing further injury or complications. Many times people wait to seek care until there are signs of more serious complications. It is not an injury that one can expect to be treated once and be done with. For this reason, it is usually best to seek chiropractic care from the onset of the problem, or from when there is first a possibility of whiplash having occurred.

Detecting Whiplash – It used to be hard to determine if a person had whiplash so it was often misdiagnosed or basically written off as the patient being something of a hypochondriac. This made it especially hard on a patient who was suffering from neck pain, but unable to get any treatment or medical coverage from insurance companies. However, nowadays there are various imaging scan devices that can be used to detect injury to soft tissue so that, even without broken bones, a person can receive treatment for whiplash.

Symptoms – Whiplash symptoms in the neck that do not incur any broken bones include neck pain and stiffness. The pain usually does not start to be felt until two hours after the accident occurs. However, it can also take up to two days for the symptoms to appear. The stiffness occurs as a result of torn muscles or other ligament damage as an effort for the muscles to take over supporting the head. It means less movement of the head.

Another common symptom of whiplash is headaches that can occur either on one side of the head or on both sides, can be constant or on intervals, and only in certain areas or isolated to one spot, often behind the eyes. As with the neck pain, tightened muscles are the culprit.

More general symptoms include blurry vision, difficulty swallowing, fatigue, dizziness, pain between the shoulder blades, pain in the arms or legs, pain the feet or hands, lower back pain or stiffness, nausea, vertigo, ringing noises in the ears, any numbness or tingling, shoulder pain, or pain in the jaw or face.
